Alcatraz turned out to me one of my favorite parts of this trip. It was so interesting.
Cold, dark, lonely, and strangely beautiful. Of course it was another foggy day, but I think that added to the whole experience. This is our view of the Bay Bridge when we headed out on the ferry.
(I'm pretty sure Colby was in the middle of doing something goofy. I've never seen him like this before.)
Approaching the island. I just thought the buildings were so beautiful... all weathered and cold.
This building was housing for the guards and their families.
The showers.
A standard cell.
Isolation.
We heard the story of this escape attempt from the son of one of the hostages.
The old library.
This is a shot of the floor in the dining hall. I was totally enchanted by the worn layers of everything to be found. The walls, rust, furniture, floors, etc.
The rec yard.
It didn't seem very big to me until I saw it in relation to the people standing down near the grass.
This was the Warden's house. It was destroyed in a fire after the jail was no longer used as a jail.
There were gardens around the grounds that must have been a nice distraction for the inmates to work on.
And then we were back to the city.
I love Alcatraz! Did you guys do the audio tour?
ReplyDeleteI am loving taking this trip vicariously.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you have considered Getty images, but when we were looking at the current needs for Alex's video portfolio, cities were listed. I think your cityscapes are so gorgeous, and if/when you apply to be rights managed they should be included.
