Macy Got an Owie

After all of our water fun on the 4th, Macy and Tyler were jumping on the tramp.  We were all out there, but missed exactly what happened.  All I know is Macy was on her belly and crying.  I went to cheer her up and had her follow me to my chair and she wouldn't walk.  After a little while of holding her and cheering her up, we found she still wouldn't walk on it.  Somewhere below her right knee was really hurting so we headed to get x-rays.  I had visions of her running around in a cast (just like Tyler did before his second birthday) and couldn't believe 2 of our 3 kids were going to have a broken leg and both before their second birthday.  She fell asleep in the car right away, thankfully, but woke up only twenty or thirty minutes later really sad about her hurting leg.  *Note: it only took maybe 25 min to get to the St. George Instacare, but they had a long wait ahead of us so we went for a little drive to pass the time and let her nap a little longer.  So much for that great plan.

Colby decided to grab a water and a snack from Target and Macy made sure to cheer right up before he made it back to the van.

She is the cutest little character.  Even when she was really hurting.

We had a really long wait in the doctor's office.  The doc's first evaluation was that she most likely had a spiral fracture in the small bone in her shin (just like Tyler had) so he ordered x-rays.  Turns out, there were five other people needing x-rays ahead of us so we sat and waited and waited and sat.  Macy still couldn't walk on it or put any weight on it, so we had to get really creative to keep her entertained.  She does not sit still.  Ever.  Taking selfies worked for a little while.  Colby got a good nap in as well.

Once it was time for her x-ray, she was hysterical.  She didn't like the room.  She didn't like laying on the table.  She didn't like the lead blanket.  She didn't like Daddy holding her down.  She didn't like the x-ray tech.  She didn't like any of it.  So the poor guy taking her images gave her as many stickers as he could so she might cheer up.  It didn't make a difference until she was sitting back in the exam room, but they kept her rather busy until the doctor came in to tell us the results.

Turns out, no breaks.  Just a sprain or deep bruise that left her in a lot of pain for almost two days.  But she's a determined little bugger and was back on it, walking with support of the wall, chair, or anything else she could find by the next day.  By the second day, the only real evidence of her injury was slightly less jumping and a little less aggressiveness in her climbing.

We are happy to report she's as good as new and the cutest little patient.

Won't Be Stopped

You know... I was worried about Tyler and how he would tolerate his cast.  That first 24 hours had me really nervous.  He hardly slept because it rubbed on his other leg and he didn't do anything but sit.  It was like he was an infant on the verge of crawling all over again, except for this time he was almost two and knew he was able to go wherever he wanted, but just couldn't figure out how.

Within a day he could "crawl," his leg just dragging behind him.  The next day he was walking.
So here's a look at all the things Tyler can do, in spite of his cast.

He could "drive" the truck while I cleaned it.

He could sit and play with Marshall for hours and hours.

Play with Play-Doh.

Stand right up.

Get his own breakfast.

And take it anywhere in the house.

Play in the sandbox.

Go exploring and Easter Egg hunting.

Play on the playground.
Not only could he climb the stairs and play,
but he worked really hard to prove that he could climb UP the slide.
I was bummed to never get a picture of it.

Climb just about anything.
He had managed to climb into this baby walker and was happy to be there.

I love you Tyler.  You independent, persistent little guy.
You should get your cast off right around your birthday.

It came.

Since Marshall was fairly young I have resigned myself to the fact that there would come a day (or days) that I would find myself in the Dr.'s office waiting for a cast/stitches/x-rays/etc.  I've always sort of planned on it so I wouldn't be shocked to find myself there.  Well, today was that day.  Really just the first, I'm sure, but we've survived the initial experience and now I'm starting to wonder how the rest of it will pan out.
Tyler is now officially the first of our kids to break a bone.  He got tripped up by a hose yesterday while we were helping Uncle Jon with his Eagle Project and it turns out he broke his tibia.  It is a long, diagonal fracture through the bigger shin bone and I feel so bad for the little guy.

He was a pretty brave boy while the doctor was checking out his leg and he resisted plenty while he was getting x-rayed, but he was ticked when they started putting the cast on.  He didn't get over that part for a while.  I am so glad I thought to grab his blankie and doggie when we left for the doctor- he held on to those two things quite a bit through the various procedures and sweetly demanded them when his cast was going on.  He's sleeping it all off now, but I'm definitely nervous about the adjustment period we're all going to have to this giant "club" on his leg.  I never thought to mentally prep myself for this part.
Look how sweet he looks... the poor kid spent a good three hours sleeping once we got home from the doctor.
Get better soon my little one.

Oh the joys of having boys.

For a while now we've been celebrating the fact that Colby's parents are collecting a bunch of future missionaries as grandchildren.  No girls yet... and Cass's new baby is gonna make 4.  So the Three Amigos will be adding another bruiser to their clan.  It's taken a while, but these three finally really capitalized on their role of rough and tough grandsons.
Notice all three of these boys are sporting minor boo boos.  Karter bumped his eye on a potted plant, Marshall tripped and hit his eyebrow and between the eyes on the arm of a patio chair, and Tyler tripped on his towel after swimming and face planted on the pool deck.  It was a rough week at Grandma's house.
Marshall's owie definitely takes the cake though.  The first day his bumps were really only swollen.  No real color.  But then the battle scars progressed.  Here's a play by play through pictures.
You'll notice the day of that its hard to see exactly what happened.  Notice his left eye looks a little heavy because it is swollen along the brow line.  I should have taken a picture Sunday evening... he looked like Quasimodo or something with a big old knot between his eyes.
These last few were from this afternoon.  The color has gotten progressively darker and spread into a double black eye.  The poor kid looks like he got in a fight or something.  On Sunday he saw himself in the mirror and laughed, "I look like a different kid!"  Every time we ask him if it hurts he tells us no.
I'm not sure what this kid's head is made of, but he sure is tough!
